When we speak about a topic as complex as wealth inequality, we need to make sure everyone is on the same page. The terms we use can have different meanings to different people, or they can be too insular for us to assume that every conversation partner or reader knows them. We have to establish a shared language, a shared set of interpretations and definitions, which we can work with.

I envision our project to provide a mirroring that society can look at, reminding people: you have a role to play.

That is why the Wealth Inequality Initiative has partnered with the Centro de Estudios de Conflicto y Cohesión Social (COES) in Chile to produce a glossary for wealth inequality. COES is the joint research initiative by several of Chile’s most prestigious universities investigating social conflict and cohesion in Chile. Working with their researchers, we are building a library of the central terms in our field. We want this to be a broad source of knowledge, with easy to understand and yet academically valid definitions that form a start of the shared language of wealth inequality. Hopefully, these terms help you interpret the contents of this page and engage in conversation with us!

We do our best to select both the terms that are broadly applicable and the ones that are more specific, but still important. If you feel we are still missing an important term, please let us know! We are always happy to work further on our shared understanding.
