The Eastern Cape, a region of striking natural beauty and enduring strength, faces some of South Africa’s deepest social and economic inequalities. Women and children here often contend with inadequate healthcare, under-resourced schools, and few paths to stable employment. Yet amid these hardships, local communities are forging solutions from within—driven by leaders committed to lasting change.
In this edition of “A Conversation With…”, we speak with Gqibelo Dandala, Executive Director of One to One Africa, about how community-led action is transforming lives in the Eastern Cape. Supported by the Julius Baer Foundation, the Enable-i project works directly with women and young children through a central community hub. The initiative offers practical training for women seeking income opportunities, alongside early learning programmes designed to support children’s cognitive and emotional development.
Rather than imposing solutions, One to One Africa collaborates closely with residents, treating them as clients rather than passive recipients. As Gqibelo explains, “Our approach is fundamentally about empowerment. We stand shoulder to shoulder with the people we serve.” This mindset shifts the focus from aid to partnership, helping individuals build confidence, skills, and independence.
Since launching, Enable-i has built strong ties with government agencies and private sector partners, co-hosting policy discussions and identifying real job opportunities through factory visits—all aimed at connecting marginalised women to viable work.
