#5 Equality Talks 2025: Educate, include, empower - working across the wealth divide

Fifth episode with Harambee

The Equality Talks series is dedicated to exploring innovative solutions to inequalities worldwide, with a focus on creating a more inclusive future. Through insightful conversations with our partners, we examine the challenges they face and the ways they promote social and economic opportunities. Our goal is to highlight their efforts in building and maintaining relationships across the wealth divide, and to showcase the positive impact they have achieved and strive for in the future.

In this fifth episode, we visit South Africa—a nation full of promise but still constrained by deep-rooted structural divisions. Today, more than half of young people aged 15 to 34 are neither employed nor enrolled in education or training.

We speak with Debbie Marshall, Head of Learning Solutions, Opportunity Development, and Incubation at Harambee, a social enterprise revolutionising how young people access the workforce. Since 2011, Harambee has helped over four million young jobseekers find training and employment.

Together, we explore how Harambee turns exclusion into opportunity through practical innovation and long-term partnerships. A key part of this effort is their Work Readiness Programme, designed to equip employers with the tools needed to successfully hire, onboard, and support young talent—building confidence and motivation from day one.
